anothermountainman¡¦s Kan Zi takes us on a visual journey reading characters
/ Chinese characters which he has captured on camera over the last 10 years.
They have been collected from different Chinese cities as well as Chinatowns
overseas, where Chinese footprints (zi (characters) and Chinese characters)
are spotted ¡V in the streets, around corners, at temples, on shop signboards
and street signs. These zi (characters) are depicted in various ways, from
calligraphic writing styles to un-designed graffiti approaches, from simplified
Chinese characters used in Mainland China and Singapore to the traditional
Chinese characters used in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
It is uncertain whether these zi (characters) and Chinese characters still
exist in these places, but what¡¦s been framed has become a series of photographic
images, which at times presents a rich visual graphic vocabulary, and communicates
a subtle chemistry between the locale and the city at a certain moment
of time.
This pocket-size book Kan Zi (reading characters / Chinese characters),
features over 400 images, each enlightened by anecdotal ¡¥sub-texts¡¦ or
events expressive of the people and their relationship with the community.
