Long ago and far away, the Miao people asked a goddess for an umbrella to hold up the sky. To make the umbrella, the goddess wove a cloth of clouds, washed it, and hung it out to dry. But a gust of wind sent the cloud-cloth flying past a beehive and a pond, spattering it with colours. In one fell swoop, Batik was born.
Kuen Kuen Liu Spichiger heard many legends while studying traditional Batik-making with the Miao people in southwest China. Inspired by the Miao's love and respect for nature, she created a six-metre-long Batik scroll, now reshaped into an illustrated book. The boxed set comes with a 1.8-metre fabric reproduction of her original scroll.
