Works of Movana Chen

Movana Chen knits art from the written word. First, she asks friends and family to gift her books of personal significance. Then, she reads the books and digests them with a shredder, turning the pages into threads, and the threads into loops and whorls of a new knitted form. Even if the books’ original words are no longer intelligible, their significance endures in Chen’s wall tapestries, dresses, and signature ‘body containers’.

KNITerature is a monograph of Chen’s knitted works through 2013. More than just a record of her artistic practice, it documents the stories behind each work: the names of the books and the people who once owned them, the places they’ve travelled, and the number of pages and hours needed to knit them a new life. From Hong Kong to Beijing to London to Seoul to Michigan, Chen travels the globe to knit new art with friends from all walks of life.

Featuring a rich collection of documentary photographs and essays by Jonathan Thomson, Helen Ng, Evangelo Costadimas, Juan Park, and Jill Wong. This book was published on the occasion of Movana Chen's solo exhibition KNITerature: The Art of Movana Chen at Hong Kong’s ArtisTree gallery in October 2013.
